Pet-Friendly Flowers: A Thoughtful Touch for Every Home

I recently created a lovely hamper to celebrate the arrival of a baby girl. Alongside a bunny plush toy, baby bibs, chocolates, and a candle for the new mum, I included a petite vase of flowers to brighten her day. Knowing that the family has a pet cat made me pause and think — are the flowers I’m using safe for pets?
A friend once told me how her cat became seriously ill after nibbling on lilies she received in a bouquet. Even a small amount was enough to send her cat to the vet. Thankfully, the cat recovered, but it was a powerful reminder: while flowers bring joy, they should never come at the risk of harming our furry companions.

Pet-Safe Flowers and Foliage
Here are a few flowers and greens that are generally safe for cats and dogs:
Roses (thornless)
Lisianthus
Stocks
Sunflowers
Snapdragons
Asters
Zinnias
Pittosporum (Pitto foliage)
For this hamper, I used roses, stocks, lisianthus, and pittosporum — a soft, charming mix perfect for the occasion.
⚠️ Flowers to Avoid Around Pets
Some flowers and foliage can be toxic to cats and dogs, including:
Lilies (extremely toxic to cats)
Tulips
Daffodils
Chrysanthemums
Baby’s Breath
Eucalyptus
Peonies
Sago Palm
Even a small amount can cause harm, so it’s always worth double-checking. If you’re unsure, better do a quick online search before choosing flowers for a pet-friendly home.
Choosing pet-safe flowers means everyone in the household can enjoy the beauty — safely and joyfully.
